Privacy Policy

Last updated: 16 September 2026

BookmarkUp is a browser extension that opens bookmarks in a new tab with a single left click. It is built to respect your privacy: it does not collect, store, transmit, or sell any personal data. There are no accounts, no tracking, and no analytics.

The short version

  • No accounts, no sign-in, no tracking, no analytics.
  • Nothing you do is sent to us or to any third party. We operate no servers that receive your data.
  • Your bookmarks are read only to display and open them on your own device, and are never uploaded.
  • Your settings are stored locally in your browser and are removed when you uninstall.

What the extension accesses, and why

To do its job, BookmarkUp needs certain browser permissions. Each is used only for the feature described, entirely on your device:

  • Bookmarks - to read your bookmarks so it can list them in the popup, open them, and apply the small marker that makes the new-tab behavior work. It can also restore the original bookmark URLs (for example when you remove the extension).
  • Storage - to save your own settings (theme, language, and the various new-tab behavior toggles) locally in your browser.
  • Access to websites you visit - used only at the moment you click a managed bookmark, to open the real page in a new tab and, if you have turned on the same-tab or search-engine options, to check the address of the tab you are currently on so it can decide where to open. This happens locally; the contents of the pages you visit are never read, stored, or transmitted.
  • Favicons - to show each site's small icon next to bookmarks and search engines in the popup.

Network activity

To open a bookmark without disturbing the page you are on, BookmarkUp makes a single empty, no-content network request to a neutral endpoint that returns an empty "204" response. This request carries none of your data and returns nothing; it exists only to stop your current tab from navigating. The extension makes no other network requests and sends no data anywhere.

Data storage and retention

The only data BookmarkUp stores is your settings, kept in your browser's local extension storage on your device. It is never synced to us. When you remove the extension (via "Delete extension" in Settings, or by uninstalling it), your original bookmarks are restored and the saved settings are cleared.

Third parties

BookmarkUp shares no data with third parties, because it collects none. It includes no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking code, and loads no remote code - all of its code ships inside the extension package.

Children's privacy

BookmarkUp does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date. Material changes will also be noted in the extension's release notes.
